Il peut être propulsé par une hélice (moteur d'aviation), une turbine, un turboréacteur ou un moteur électrique linéaire et est supporté par un coussin d'air, ce qui lui permet de se déplacer sans contact avec la voie, et donc sans frottement avec cette dernière. Son principe de fonctionnement emprunte aussi à la technique du monorail. C’est une invention française, due à l'ingénieur Jean Bertin, qui n’a cependant jamais connu d’exploitation commerciale. Le nom « Aérotrain » est une marque utilisée comme nom en France, déposée initialement par la société de l'Aérotrain le 13 juillet 1962.
