Beschreibung

TRANSPORT FOR WALES — BRITISH RAIL CLASS 150/2 SPRINTER The Class 150/2 is a two-car diesel multiple unit from British Rail’s second-generation Sprinter family. Built by British Rail Engineering Limited (BREL) at York between 1986 and 1987, 85 Class 150/2 units were produced to modernise local and regional rail services and replace ageing first-generation diesel units. Unlike the earlier Class 150/1, the Class 150/2 features a distinctive front-end gangway, allowing passengers and staff to move between coupled units. Each driving car has its own Cummins diesel engine, driving through a Voith hydraulic transmission. With a maximum operating speed of 75 mph (121 km/h), the Sprinters became a familiar sight on busy commuter lines, rural branches and regional routes across Britain. Following privatisation, Class 150/2 units worked for a number of operators. The fleet became particularly associated with Wales and the Borders, where trains inherited from Arriva Trains Wales entered Transport for Wales service from 2018. In their later years, these hard-working units carried the modern Transport for Wales identity while continuing to operate everyday passenger services. The introduction of newer rolling stock, including Class 197, Class 231 and South Wales Metro trains, marked the gradual withdrawal of the older Sprinter fleet.
