VIRGIN CROSSCOUNTRY HST — INTERCITY 125 Relive the era of Virgin CrossCountry's red-and-black High Speed Trains in Transport Fever 3. This pack brings together the Class 43 diesel HST power car, a varied collection of Mk3 carriages and ready-made trains inspired by British long-distance express travel. THE REAL TRAIN — A SHORT HISTORY The British Rail High Speed Train, popularly known as the InterCity 125, entered passenger service in 1976. Its familiar formation placed a streamlined Class 43 diesel-electric power car at each end of a rake of air-conditioned Mark 3 coaches. The original Paxman Valenta engines delivered about 2,250 brake horsepower per power car, and the HST transformed inter-city journeys with regular 125 mph operation. Virgin Trains took over the CrossCountry franchise in January 1997 and applied its distinctive red-and-black identity to HST power cars and Mk3 coaches. At the height of the Virgin era, seven-coach HST sets worked services linking Scotland and north-east England through Birmingham and Bristol towards Devon, Cornwall and the South Coast. These were among the most recognisable trains of Britain's late-1990s railway. The introduction of Class 220 Voyager and Class 221 Super Voyager trains from 2001 began replacing the older HST fleet. Virgin's September 2002 'Operation Princess' timetable recast the CrossCountry network, and remaining HST workings dwindled through 2003. HSTs and their coaches later went on to serve other operators, cementing the InterCity 125 as one of Britain's most successful diesel express designs. FORMATION NOTE The classic 2+7 set is the main period-inspired formation. The 2+3, 2+8 All Mk3 Types, 2+10 and 2+12 options, and some other combinations, are gameplay choices or showcases, not claims of exact historical Virgin CrossCountry diagrams.
